I need your help….

This summer I will be at home planning for next year’s students.  Imagine that you are helping me to plan for my classes next year (actually, you ARE helping me).  Comment below on which activities you enjoyed most in our math class and which activities helped you to LEARN the math concepts best.  Be sure to EXPLAIN why/how the activity helped you.  Below are a few examples of things we did this year:

  • carousel activities (where you go around the room solving equations taped to the wall)
  • popcorn activities (you selected small crumpled pieces of paper with equations on them to solve with your group)
  • group work
  • mastery stamps (I’d go around and stamp papers with correct solutions — and then you’d help stamp)
  • homework (well, someone might have enjoyed this)
  • Help Table (during seatwork, you could come back to the table for help
  • dry erase boards
  • independent seatwork (we didn’t do much of it, but you might have enjoyed it)
  • “I Say, You Say” game to help you work with function tables
  • computer lab (this activity or the times we went to work on math practice games in the lab)
  • OP help
  • any other activities or strategies I used to help you

  1. I actually liked all of the activities we did this year. I like the variety. I’m not sure if we had enough variety each week, but I’m sure you’ll tell me your thoughts, too….

  2. I loved the Stamp activity because students learn easier from their peers than from a teacher and Being an ‘expert’ helps finalize that topic inside your head.

    Comment by TL@P6 | June 14, 2010 | Reply

    • Very well stated. I agree that your peers can sometimes help you to understand the topic better so you can “own” the information that you are learning. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

    • Math videos is a really good idea for next year. I do have a collection of cartoons but I didn’t use any of them this year…. thanks for the suggestion.

    • Hi Alexis, I am soooooooooooo thrilled that you loved the area and mean lessons. Do you remember what part of the lesson you liked, so I can be sure to that again? Thanks for your important feedback.

  6. I loved everything we did this year. But you also have to go by what you wanna teach us. But if its the childrens ideas, then we are just trying to get stuff that is easy and fun. Not the stuff that we need to learn how to do more.

    Comment by Kayla@pd6 | June 15, 2010 | Reply

    • Yes, there are very specific skills that I need to teach you each year to get you ready for the next year and, eventually, for the math you will need in your real world outside of class. Did you have a favorite activity?

      Comment by dcaine | June 15, 2010 | Reply

      • ummmmmm not really? I think i liked the groups because it made me focus and I love how i get help when i need it. Besides when people wouldn’t help me.. Some people say NO you can do it yourself.

  7. I liked the volume of a cylinder activity. I also had fun doing the “stamp activity” because you get to compete with the people at your table

    Comment by lnayah@per.6 | June 15, 2010 | Reply

    • Hmmm…. you’re right…. you did get to “compete” — even though that’s not really how I had it planned, it is very encouraging for some students to compete with their group to see who can “win” the expert stamp first. Have a great summer.

  13. I liked a lot of the activites we did this year. They have all helped me with my understanding of the math concepts. My favorites were probably going around the room solving the problems, the back table group work with the dry erase boards, and regular group work/group games.

    Comment by SM@P5 | June 15, 2010 | Reply

    • I like the carousel activities, too, where you move around the room. Can you explain WHY you like those? Is it the movement, the discussions, the freedom???

      Comment by dcaine | June 15, 2010 | Reply

  14. I really liked it because we could move around istead of staying in our seats all day. It was nice to know you would always help us too.

  27. One activity that i liked is the popcorn activity because we were able to get up and move around and talk (about math) in stead of just sitting in one seat silently.

    Comment by leann | June 15, 2010 | Reply

  28. I think that group work helped alot because you have about 4 or 5 people at your table that is there to heip you , and it gives you the teacher a little more time to teach because youo will’nt have to stop and explaine stuff because thats what the groups are for. The next thing was the dry erase bordes , I guess it was just fun , I mean because it gets kind of boring just writting with pencils , its a change.

    Comment by SC@P6 | June 15, 2010 | Reply

    • Simone thanks for the great feedback. I like the group work and dry erase strategy, too.
